A derelict Victorian structure on Brighton seafront is to be rebuilt with £9m funding from the Department for Transport.Brighton and Hove City Council said the former West Street Shelter Hall was in very poor condition and needed to be replaced urgently.
The structure, part of Brighton Arches, supports the upper promenade at the junction of the A259 and West Street.Part of the A259 fell in last year when a pub roof beneath collapsed.The council said the junction would be remodelled to improve traffic flow.
Councillors have already agreed to spend £250,000 from the city’s budget on the work.”This will enable us to reconstruct the derelict Victorian former shelter hall and also provide a great new seafront business location on the lower promenade as well as new public toilets,” said Councillor Ian Davey.
Ten restored Victorian seafront arches under Kings Road were opened last year.
